  1 Question
Q: What is the difference between Personal Pace and Self Propelled?
by Steve Brasington from South Carolina on April 09, 2015

A: Steve - Toro's "Personal Pace" system is one type of self-propelled drive system on a walk behind mower. The Personal Pace self-propel system automatically adjusts the speed of the mower to your walking speed. With a normal self-propelled system, the speed of the mower is controlled with a bail, a lever or some other mechanical means.

Very Very Good
I've only used manual push and front wheel self-propelled lawn mowers and this is the most expensive one I've owned. It's also the best I've owned so far.

What I liked:
The engine does typically start on the first pull. I'm not sure if it's the rear wheel drive or the Toro power drive that is responsible for the ease of use. It rarely feels like I make any significant effort to move the mower. I've had no issues moving the mower backward in any situation. The mulching capability is... more

Toro's Warranty Is A Sham!
I had a personal pace Toro Recycler purchased in October 2015. In October 2016 it literally exploded with engine fragments flying everywhere. Toro said I failed to keep oil in it which was not true. The fact is the Briggs & Stratton engine burned oil and has since been discontinued.

Toro would not cover anything so I am left with having to buy a new mower after a year of use. I always kept oil at the proper level and changed it according to the manual. Do not buy Toro products. They do... more

Good Mower
Mower arrived quickly. I was worried when it arrived as the box was beaten badly enough that the handles were protruding through the box, and it was left hanging half off of my porch. Thanks Fedex! The handles were bent slightly, but nothing a few whacks with a rubber mallet couldn't fix.Assembly aside from that was a breeze and it fired on the first pull. Mowed 3 times since I received it and the mower does a great job.
Pros: Easy To Use, Fast
Cons: Expensive

Toro Self-propelled Mower
My Toro self-propelled mower is about three years old and has performed quite well up until today. Went I went to start it this morning it lunged forward knocking me to the ground. Determined that nothing was going to beat me I went out a little later and started it again. Once again it lunged. As I was moving I was having to literally pulled backward and it seemed to be stuck on full speed ahead and moving much faster that I possibly could. This continued the entire time I was mowing. ... more

Linda,
Your mower is covered under a 5-year warranty which will provide service to you free of charge. Unfortunately it must be performed by a certified Honda repair center however.

Still On The Fence
Before I get started, I am a 47-year-old, slightly overweight male married 16 years with 3 children. I say that to give you an idea - I'm an everyday guy with a desk job, a gym membership that I don't use enough, and a set of golf clubs that are calling my name all day long (10 handicap). Now on to the mower :)

I found this at a great discount locally - 33% off - so I took a chance. The cast deck and the rear-wheel drive were the biggest factors (besides price). Toro has a decent reputation,... more
Pros: Easy To Use, High Quality, Reliable, Durable
Cons: Balance - It's Back Heavy, Push Bar Positioning

Typical Government Compliant Mower
The mower starts easily and runs well. The personal pace feature works well. It mulches the clippings and leaves better than my old mower. The wheels are easy to adjust for cutting height. I like the cast aluminum deck.
Pros: High Quality, Quiet, Easy To Store, I'd Buy It Again
Cons: Expensive, Engine Stops or Blade Brake Safety System, Flywheel Brake and Lever for Starting/Running

Impressive
Never have had a mower start this easily. Once I got the height adjustment set right, she mulches like a champ. My only complaint is it's a little pricey. Otherwise, I'm very happy.

Stay Away From This Mower, Do Not Buy This One
The 'Auto Choke' doesn't work and since there is no primer bulb you have to pull it two or three times every time to get the thing started. Then the 'Personal Pace' doesn't disengage so it is hard to pull backwards as when you mow under shrubs and so on. Then when you change the oil, the stuff runs all over the concrete and grass. VERY POORLY designed. Stay away from this mower
Manufacturer Response
Brand Rep
Gordon,
First be sure to have your mower is filled up with fresh gasoline. Old gas can also lead to problems starting. If you have last season's gas in your mower, drain your fuel tank and fill with fresh gas. Other possible causes include:
• Loose, Dirty or Disconnected Spark Plug in Your Lawn Mower: Check it out, clean off debris, re-connect and tighten.
• Dirty Air Filter: Clean or replace.
• Fuel Not Reaching the Engine: Tap the side of the carburetor to help the flow of gas. If this doesn't work, you might need a new fuel filter.

If you are still experiencing issues with your Toro mower, please bring your unit to the nearest dealer for servicing within five years of the purchase date and Toro will fix your unit for free per our warranty statement. Please call our customer service number if you have any other questions (888) 384-9939 (toll free).

2nd Mower Was Great, 3 Weeks Later...
I'm completely satisfied with my 2nd mower. Cuts well, starts easily, and reliable. 1st mower was damaged during shipment. I was told the replacement would be sent out immediately yet it wasn't shipped until the 1st was sent back, all fine but not was I was told.

All n all great mower but I'd recommend getting it from a local dealer because FedEx tosses these mowers all around and the packaging isn't made to do cartwheels, great mower though.
Pros: Easy To Use, High Quality, Durable, Fast
Cons: Expensive, Heavy, Packaging

Dissapointed
This mower came with a bent blade as well as no oil. I can understand that the bent blade could be a result of shipping but I am not sure as the box was not severely damaged anywhere.

This is also the first mower I have ever purchased that did not include the first quart of oil.

Other than these two problems the mower has been excellent. After spending $25 on a new blade for the new mower it worked like a charm and mulches extremely well.
