Q: Just purchased this Toro Recycler® SmartStow (22") 190cc Self-Propelled Lawn Mower.
Two questions please; How is the Variable Speed Self-Propelled Drive System controlled? It goes so fast I am not able to manage it safely. (The features/specs say" Variable Speed). Does this engine require fuel to be mixed with oil?
Thank you, John

by John from Kansas on May 14, 2016

A: John - the speed of the Toro 20339 is controlled by the back bail handle (appears to be under the top of the handle in the image of this mower). As you pull this bail lever up, the speed of the mower will increase. The further "up" you pull the bail handle, the faster the mower will travel. This mower has a 4-cycle engine. You do not mix gas and oil together. Gas goes in the fuel tank and oil goes in the crankcase, just like on your car.

Q: I recently purchased the Smart Tow mower. Does a great job cutting. However, I am 6 ft 2 inc tall, and 65 years old. I was surprised at the stress it places on my back. It seems the handle is not high enough. Is there an adjustment to raise the handle?

Thank you.
Pete

by Pete from Illinois on May 04, 2016

A: Pete - sorry, but the handle height is not adjustable on the Toro model 20339 mower.
by Jose, Product Expert
Q: Is the 20339 model an electric start
by Walt from Virginia on April 24, 2016

A: Walt - the Toro model 20339 mower is recoil (rope pull) start only. No electric start.
by Jose, Product Expert
Q: Does this model need annual oil changes?
by B. Harvey from Missouri on April 24, 2016

A: Yes, the Briggs and Stratton 190cc engine on the Toro 20339 does require regular oil changes. The frequency of the oil changes is dependent on how often you use the mower, and how long it runs each time you use it. But once annually would be the minimum recommended period for changing the oil.
by Jose, Product Expert
Q: Hi Jose. Does this model have varialble speed rather one speeed fits all?
by Jim from Oklahoma on April 16, 2016

A: Jim - there is no throttle control on the Toro 20339 mower. The engine will run at a constant rpm rate when it's running
by Jose, Product Expert
Q: Does the Toro Recycler® SmartStow (22") 190cc Self-Propelled Lawn Mower have side discharge as well as a bag Thanks
by Kim from North Carolina on March 31, 2016

A: Kim - yes, the Toro model 20339 Smart Stow mower has a side discharge option. If you look at the image on our web site, the black cover on the right side of the mower deck between the front and rear wheels is the side discharge opening. You would remove that black cover. There is a deflector that snaps into place over the opening if you want to discharge your clippings rather than bagging them.

Q: I recently purchased a new toro lawn mower. I am not sure how to change the oil on the machine. Is there a tutorial of how to do so?
by Luis Ceja from New York on June 12, 2014

A: The following is available on the Toro website under their FAQ section....

How do I change the oil in my mower?
For Recycler® and Super Recycler® mowers:

Recommended Oil type for Toro Walk Behind Mowers, 4-Cycle engines - SAE 30W Detergent oil with an API service classification of SF, SG, SH, SJ, SL, or higher.

-Run the engine for five minutes to warm the oil so it drains better. (Recommend only filling fuel tank with enough gas to run for five minutes before changing oil.)
-Remove the dipstick.
-Tip the mower onto its side (air filter side up) to drain the used oil out through the oil fill tube into a drain pan. (Tipping the machine on its side is the recommended method by engine manufacturers.)
-Let oil drain completely.
-Tip the mower back up on its wheels and slowly pour new oil into the oil fill tube until oil level reaches the FULL line on the dipstick. (To properly check the oil level , wait one or two minutes after filling the engine with oil to allow it to settle. Wipe the dipstick clean, reinsert dipstick, remove dipstick and check oil level, repeat the process a second time.)
-Important Do Not overfill - If you overfill the engine with oil you will need to remove the excess oil by following the oil draining steps listed above. Too much oil can cause engine damage or failure.

The Toro 20339 Smart Stow mower has a great feature that allows the mower to be stored vertically to reduce the foot print needed to store. This feature prevents fluid leaks so no need to worry about gas and oil getting on your garage floor.

With the powerful Briggs & Stratton 190cc ready-to-start engine, there is no need to choke or prime the engine, just start and go. The 11-inch rear wheels on the Toro 20339 are great for mowing uneven terrain and give you good traction and control. ... more

Satisfied Customer!
The mower arrived overnight! It's starts first or second pull, has plenty of power, feels solid & well built. No problems with grass blowing out of the bagger like I've seen in other reviews. I haven't had any leakage when storing in folded position love that feature. I have no complaints about this mower, would recommend to anyone.

Great Concept! I Got A Bad One. :-(
I purchased this to replace an old Craftsman mower that was worn out. I researched engines, read reviews, and decided I really liked the Toro. The best selling point for me was the ability to store it vertical. That part was great! I closely followed the setup instructions, added oil (being careful not to overfill it) and was impressed how easily it started and begain mowing. 10 minutes later, I smelled oil. Uh oh. I stopped and inspected the deck and found a bit of oil around the... more

I've tried to speed up the drive speed, but I'm afraid it is maxed out. I wish I would have purchased locally so I could take it back. The box is discarded and it is too much hassle at this point.

It’s An Entry Level Mower
If your looking for a long term quality mower.. stay away from this model.. I found it to be low grade, and very flimsy.. and I don’t believe it would last more then a few seasons if used weekly ..I use it for edging.. not my main mower .. good luck.. pay more and get a better mower ...

It’s Just Ok
Bogs down ALOT!!!!! I mow only 3-4 inch grass and it has a hard time. Starts no problem. 2nd time I used it it cut out and white smoke started coming out of the exhaust port. Enough to fill up almost half of my front yard (1/4 acre lot). Mows good when it works, but like I said it cuts out several times during a single mow. Should’ve got the Cub Cadet.
Pros: Easy To Store, Fast

Follow Up
I purchased the mower and reviewed it in August. I stated that I would "put it to a test by mowing our wildflower garden in the fall". Well I did just that and the mower was great it had more than enough power and it pulled it through the thick flowers with no problem. I should mention that I first cut the flowers down with a grass whip as most of the flowers are three ft or taller. But the mower cut through everything that was on the ground. It feels solid and well built. I... more

Terry,
I apologize for the issues that you've been experiencing with your mower. I understand how frustrating that can be. After receiving your first review for this product, I reached out to you directly on 04/06/17 through your account email where I sent contact information for 3 certified repair centers in your area.

Your mower must be brought to one of these repair centers so the machine can be examined and/or warranty maintenance can be performed. Mowers Direct does not perform any maintenance or service on the equipment that we sell, nor can Mowers Direct expedite any service work as this is up to each individual certified repair center to handle. I'm sorry that you feel Mowers Direct is trying to "wash our hands of you", however there isn't anything more that we can do until your mower gets checked out. The equipment has to be looked at by a certified repair technician before anything else can happen.

I am including the contact info for the three repair centers here again as well, just in case my previous email wasn't seen or got deleted. Thank you again for your business and I hope you have a great day.

First Impression: Toro Recycler
The mower starts easily and handles well. There are 3 issues that have come up. First, the cables are long and they rub on the wheels and can catch on objects such as limbs and bushes. I had to secure them with a zip tie but this still does not keep them from rubbing the wheel.

This also prevents using the storage feature. Second, the grass catcher does not set flush with the mower. Thus, there is considerable spray of grass and leaves onto the mower body and from under the catcher out the... more

Satisfied But Not Thrilled
It started on the first pull and runs smoothly. My complaint is the grass catcher which does not seal completely where it joins the mower housing so a fair amount of grass blows out. The spring loaded door on the housing also is oddly designed so it catches lots of grass and dumps it on the ground and mower as you remove the filled catcher. Otherwise it seems to be a decent mower for the price.
Pros: Easy To Store, Easy To Use, Price, Reliable
Cons: Strange grass catcher connection

Do Not Buy From Power Equipment Direct!
My previous lawn mower was an old hand-me-down. It quit working on me half way through cutting my lawn and I finally needed to purchase a new one. Doing a little bit of research, this Toro SmartStow seemed like a good lawn mower for the price and I liked the stowing feature. It arrived quickly and I was excited to try it out and finish the back half of my lawn which was getting way overgrown. I put the gas and oil in and it started up on the second attempt. So far so good. I pulled the... more
