  1 Question
Q: I am buying a Yamaha 1000is from you. If I plan to not use the generator for a period of 4 months, so I just have to use Sta-Bil in the fuel and I am fine? Or do you recommend a draining procedure between uses, or some other kind of procedure?

by Mitch Carter from California on January 24, 2011

A: We definitely recommend the use of Sta-Bil fuel stabilizer in your generator as it will keep your fuel fresh for up to 2 years. We do recommend that you start the generator once a month to lubricate the internal parts in the system and also throw a small load on it to verify good operation.

How To Start A Portable Generator
The best way to ensure your generator lasts is to start it properly the first time.

Most of us are too proud to read owners manuals.

If you watch this video instead, you'll take better care of your generator, and it will last you much longer.

Gasoline Stabilizers
I also use Stabil in my gasoline type equipment... I always wonder how (or if) those stabilizers get old and lose their value over time sitting in a bottle that's been opened and used. (but tightly closed). Anybody?

I Googled "Sta-bil shelf life" and came up with "The shelf life of all STA-BIL® brand products is 2 years after the bottle has been opened, provided it has been tightly capped and stored in a cool, dry place."

Hope that's helpful!

Sta-bil 16 Ounce Fuel Stabilizer Review
this is good stuff, considering how long a generator stands idle, i start mine one or twice a month and it jumps every time using this product same as my lawn machines and motor cycle. if you don't use a gas treatment like sta-bil you are asking for problems on items that sit full of gas.
