Jose - how deep of grass will one of these Pro Mow reel mower mow?
Dave
from Illinois
June 17, 2013
Answer
Dave - For the most part, a Pro Mow gang reel mower will handle grass up to 4" long. If it's higher than that the reels have a tendency to push the grass over rather than cut it. We also recommend that, if it gets to that height, to go over it with a rotary and get it back down to a manageable state that the reels can handle.
Thicker, hearty grasses like Bermuda and Bahia should be cut often and smaller amounts taken off at a time. Ideally you never want to take more than 1/3 of the total length at one time. This will keep the grass healthier but may require more frequent mowing.

I cut 5 acres that is mostly hilly. I now cut it with a 50" zero-turn. Grass is junk, crabgrass, dallas grass fescue, onions, you name it. How will this mower do on this stuff?
Tony Cooper
from Tennessee
February 18, 2013
Answer
Tony - all of the gang reel mowers that we sell, including the ProMow gang reel mowers, are NOT designed to mow crabgrass, fescue and other weed-like vegetation. These are finish type mowers intended to cut large expanses of normal lawn-type grass that is mowed regularly. This type of mower will not be effective at all on what you are describing.

I have about 17 acres to cut. Most of it is thick grass and weeds. Do you think this unit will work for me? Right now I am using a 60" trail mower made by Swisher.
Willie Mobley

Answer
Willie - a gang reel mower such as the Pro-Mow definitely will NOT work for what you are describing. Gang reel mowers are finish type mowers that are effective for mowing large areas of maintained grass. This will do a very poor job of mowing thick grass and weeds. The Swisher trail mower that you are using now is the style of mower that is really designed to handle what you need to cut.

Todd.
I am trying to decide if this mower would work for my application. This website says this mower allows for uneven terrain and it also says for flat terrain. Can you clarify this for me. I have roughly 3 acres of somewhat hilly and uneven terrain. It is groomed and kept nice like a golf course. My biggest question would be. Do all of the mower sections float independently of each other or are they mounted on a common shaft?
Thanks in advance.

Answer
Tony - each of the 7 mower reels is mounted independently on the mower frame. So each reel will follow the contour of the turf, eliminating scalping or uneven cuts.

I am looking at buying a place that has 1 acre of grass, with 15 - 20 trees, a house and barn. There are no gates to go through, and it is fairly flat. I really do not like cutting grass, so the faster the better. I saw you reel mowers and a 10' swipe sounds good. is that a good idea, or is there a better idea. The property is in the middle of farm land, so I am looking for a gulf corse type lawn, but one that is just cut if you know what I mean.

Answer
You can do a gang reel mower, but you may want to consider the placement of your trees throughout the property. When mowing straight pathes, these units are great, but if you are needing to manuever around anything, they can become difficult and more time consuming.
Another option would be to go with a zero turn mower. These you can mow at a higher speed and if you get a unit with a high blade tip speed, the cut would be terrific.
Thanks,
