  4 Questions
Q: I am thinking about getting one of the 5 reel mowers for about 5 acres. What happens if the grass is more than 4 inches tall when you first cut it
by Jim from Maryland on March 20, 2016

A: Jim - if the grass is too tall when you first cut it, the grass may simply "lay over" and not cut at all. It's also possible if the grass is too tall that you'll need to increase the amount of overlap between passes, mow the same path once up and once back, or actually mow in a checkerboard pattern to obtain the desired results. Grass that's too tall may also cause a strip of uncut or taller grass towards the center of the reel even though your mower is set properly.

Q: Jose - how deep of grass will one of these Pro Mow reel mower mow?
by Dave from Illinois on June 17, 2013

A: Dave - For the most part, a Pro Mow gang reel mower will handle grass up to 4" long. If it's higher than that the reels have a tendency to push the grass over rather than cut it. We also recommend that, if it gets to that height, to go over it with a rotary and get it back down to a manageable state that the reels can handle.
Thicker, hearty grasses like Bermuda and Bahia should be cut often and smaller amounts taken off at a time. Ideally you never want to take more than 1/3 of the total length at one time. This will keep the grass healthier but may require more frequent mowing.

Q: I cut 5 acres that is mostly hilly. I now cut it with a 50" zero-turn. Grass is junk, crabgrass, dallas grass fescue, onions, you name it. How will this mower do on this stuff?
by Tony Cooper from Tennessee on February 18, 2013

A: Tony - all of the gang reel mowers that we sell, including the ProMow gang reel mowers, are NOT designed to mow crabgrass, fescue and other weed-like vegetation. These are finish type mowers intended to cut large expanses of normal lawn-type grass that is mowed regularly. This type of mower will not be effective at all on what you are describing.
by Jose, Product Expert
Q: I have about 17 acres to cut. Most of it is thick grass and weeds. Do you think this unit will work for me? Right now I am using a 60" trail mower made by Swisher.
by Willie Mobley from North Carolina on October 09, 2012

A: Willie - a gang reel mower such as the Pro-Mow definitely will NOT work for what you are describing. Gang reel mowers are finish type mowers that are effective for mowing large areas of maintained grass. This will do a very poor job of mowing thick grass and weeds. The Swisher trail mower that you are using now is the style of mower that is really designed to handle what you need to cut.

Not Worth It!
Thought this was a great idea. Assembly was average, adjustments were difficult. Broke an axle bolt adjusting the blade height - poor design.

Doesn't provide a good cut. Lays the grass and weeds down without cutting. Strange for a "lawnmower"! Too heavy and difficult to line up for attaching. Will use my power mower first and hope to use this for short grass maintenance afterward. Chinese "junk" !
Pros: Nice paint
Cons: Heavy, Difficult To Use, Unreliable, Bad Instructions

Please keep in mind that this is a Finish Cut Mower, not intended to cut weeds or very tall grass. Please refer to the Owner's Manual on page 7 for mowing tips.

Bad Design. Not Worth It!
I bought this mower last year. I spend more time working on it trying to keep it adjusted than I do mowing. The turn buckles used to adjust the cutter bar are terrible. They have no way to lock them down so they vibrate either loose or tight. Too loose and the grass doesn't get cut and too tight the reel locks up. Their video for backlapping shows a design that does not use a turnbuckle and has a lock nut that can be tightened once the adjustment is made. The pro model I have uses a turnbuckle... more
Cons: Low Quality, Difficult To Use, Unreliable, Durability

Suprisingly Good Performance
It takes some time to appreciate just how well these mowers can perform. I am pulling them with a zero turn and the speed response is very good as it allows the user to buzz through difficult thick grass and old discharge without plugging the mowers. My mowing requirements vary a great deal from short easy cutting to longer thicker turf. With patience and persistence it is stunning to see how quickly this mower can do a beautiful job under adverse conditions. Many times without going back... more

Perfect Cut
My 3/4 acre front and back yard looks like a golf course using this mower. No comparison to a rotary cutter. Lawn never looked better.
Pros: Durable, Quiet, Fast, I'd Buy It Again
Cons: Time Consuming To Change Height Of Cut

Mower Array Is Great
This array cut our mowing time in half the very first time we used it. Still getting the hang of mowing around trees but imagine it will cut our time even more as we get better at it.
Pros: Fast
Cons: Expensive

I'm Having A Problem!
I love the reel mowers and I'm cutting my 1/2 acre quickly. But the reels are not cutting the seed stalks of the Brumuda grass. I've tried cutting heights of 11/2", 1" and now 1 1/4", but the mowers are mashing the stalks down and the next day, there they are standing up again.

I'm told that Pro mow makes an 8 blade reel but it would be expensive for me to change over.

I'm just hoping the grass will stop going to seed.

Does The Job So Far
I got this to mow hitting decks at my driving range. It's done a good job so far. I have it on the 5/8 inch setting, and it leaves a smooth, tight cut my customers like.

Much better than the Cub Cadet riding mower did (I use the mower to pull the Pro Mower now). It definitely isn't made to handle anything more extreme than smooth, Bermuda-type grass though.
