  14 Questions
Q: Where can I purchase arm rests for a 42" Ariens mower?
by TJ Davis from Florida on April 06, 2014

A: T.J. - unfortunately, the stock seat that comes on an Ariens Zoom42 mower is not compatible with an arm rest kit. If you really want arm rests on your Zoom42, you'll need to purchase an a new seat that has arm rests.
by Jose, Product Expert

Q: For the Ariens 42" zero turn, how many anti-scalp wheels on the front of the deck and how many on the rear of the deck?

by Joe from Virginia on August 24, 2013

A: This particular model is going to only have 4 anti-scalp wheels, you will have two in the front and two in the back. The picture from Ariens is deceiving because it is a picture of a Zoom 42", but they do not add the right anti-scalp wheel on the front for whatever reason.
by Jose, Product Expert

Q: What is the stability of this mower going up and down hills?
by Jack Voelz from Indiana on April 12, 2013

A: Jack - the Ariens Zoom 34 will mow effectively on slopes or inclines up to 17 degree's of slope. Any steeper than that and you may have traction issues, especially if the grass is wet.
by Jose, Product Expert

Q: The Ariens 42 says that it's 54 inches wide is that with the grass deflector and does that fold up to make it less. Thanks
by Sam Panasci from New York on February 20, 2012

A: Sam - yes, the overall width of 54" is with the side discharge chute cover in the down position. If you fold it up, the overall width of the mower is approx. 43-1/2".
by Jose, Product Expert

Q: What is the difference between Transaxles and hydorstatic transmition on the ZTR mowers?
by CK on July 24, 2011

A: Thanks for your inquiry.

The difference between transaxle and hydrostatic transmissions on zero turn mowers is as follows:

The transaxle has the pump and wheel motor in one case. It is belt driven.
The hydrostatic is propelled with fluid and a seperate pump. It is not belt driven.
by Jose, Product Expert

Q: Todd, if i buy this mower and something goes wrong within the 3 year warranty, how would i get it fixed?
by Joe from Connecticut on June 26, 2011

A: Joe - any needed warranty service would be provided by your local Ariens dealer. We have a link on our web site under customer service that would allow you to look up the closest Ariens service centers using your zip code.
by Jose, Product Expert

Q: I have a new 2011 Ariens Zoom 42 mower and would like to purchase a sun shade for it, but all that I have found are for 2008 or earlier model years. Is there a sun shade available for the new model?
by Gary from Ohio on June 24, 2011

A: Gary - Ariens stopped offering a sun shade for their Zoom series zero turn mowers a couple of years ago. There are a couple of after market sun shades out there that will fit on the newer Ariens Zoom models, but we do not offer one.
by Jose, Product Expert

Q: Are zero turn mowers set up to pull say a 17' dump cart for other yard work like conventional riding mowers?
by Joe from Pennsylvania on June 23, 2011

A: Joe - the maximum weight that a zero turn mower can "pull" (tow) is typically about 200 - 250 pounds. You could pull a 17 foot dump cart, which weighs about 160 lbs. You just couldn't put a whole lot of "stuff" in the cart.
by Jose, Product Expert

Q: the ariens zero turn mowers, do they have snow blowers available? and if so are they easy to mount? just trying to cut back on the number of gas engines to maintain. thanks Troy
by Troy Donth from Minnesota on June 11, 2011

A: Troy - Ariens does make a snow blower attachment that mounts to the front of their zero turn mowers. I would say the installation is moderate in terms of ease. We don't stock the snow blower attachment, but we would be able to special order it for you if you decide you want one. To be honest, the snow blower attachment is not a big seller, mostly because of the handling and traction of a zero turn mower on snow and ice. Give us a call if you want to find out more about the Ariens snow blower attachment for their zero turn mowers.

Q: I've looked at this at home depot and at your competitors wise guys web site and they both have briggs and stratton as the engine your web site says a kohler why is it a different engine for the same mower?
by Christi from Texas on May 22, 2011

A: Christi - I can't comment on what our competitor's are showing on their web sites, but if you are looking at a 2011 Ariens Zoom 42 (#915159), the engine on this mower is definitely a 22hp Kohler Courage engine. The 2010 model (#915141) had a 16.5hp Briggs and Stratton engine, but this model is out of production and no longer available.
by Jose, Product Expert

Q: I have a 42" front engine tractor currently. I want to cut down mowing time on a 2/3 acre lot. Would a 42" zero turn be recommended? Would 48"+ be overkill?
Thanks!

by Tim L. from Wisconsin on May 17, 2011

A: Tim - for a lot that is less than 1 acre, you could probably get away with using a 32" or 34" zero turn mower and still cut your mowing time. A 42" model would be plenty big enough. Yes, a 48" model would be more mower than you need for mowing less than one acre.
by Jose, Product Expert

Q: Does this Ariens Zoom42 (42") 22HP Zero Turn Lawn Mower (2011 Model) really come with a two-cylinder Kohler engine?
Thank you!

by Alan Church from South Dakota on May 16, 2011

A: Alan - yes, the Ariens Zoom 42 features a Kohler Courage twin cylinder engine.
by Jose, Product Expert

Q: Describe how much assembly is required when this mower is shipped to me?
by Bill Moyer from Kansas on April 21, 2011

A: Thanks for your inquiry. The only assembly required is putting on the seat. Then you just have to gas , oil and go!!
by Jose, Product Expert

Q: Todd, what is the overall length and width of the 42" machine?
by Hollis Earnest from Illinois on March 24, 2011

A: Thanks for your inquiry. The overall length of this model is 64 inches. The overall width of this model is 54 inches.

This Is The Worst Mower Ever
This mower is a waste of money. The kill switch does not allow the motor to start, even when sitting in the seat. The belts broke the first summer. There was a gas cap from the manufacturer that didn't belong to our mower embedded in the belts. Finally customer service is unfriendly and unhelpful. I don't normally write reviews, but this mower is so bad I was driven to write this. Run the other way.
Cons: Low Quality, Unreliable, Durability, Kill switch causes the motor to not start.

Love The Mower Hate The Mulch Kit
I purchased an Ariens Zoom 42 from a big box store and the mulch kit from mowers direct. After installing the mulch kit (which requires jacking up the mower and removing the blades - a real pain BTW), I experienced a trail of grass about 2 inches wide trailing from the mower, especially when mowing in a circle (i.e., around trees) . When shopping for the mulch kit, Ariens told me the kit needed an additional part (51522800) which basically are foam block inserts to block the grass leaking... more

Overall, I'm Satisfied
I spent a couple of weeks searching for a 42" mower for my acre and half yard. Decided on this Ariens over the Toro time cutter SS.

The Toro looks very cheap to me. I paid by check, it took longer, but I saved 50 or so bucks. Get the lift gate service- you can't unload the mower without it. The mower came in an 18-wheeler, packaged well on 2 pallets. It was very hard to get off the pallets. I got aggravated and lifted mower off pallets completely after busting up my thumb trying to... more

Mixed Review
OK- I had purchased a 40" Ariens Zoom back in 2002, used it for 10 years on a large residential lot until it bit the dirt. I reluctantly went to my local big-box hardware store and bought a Husqvarna zero-turn model and HATED IT! It wasn't even comparable to the Ariens I had before, even though it cost about the same, had a bigger cutting radius and looked like a good unit. I put 10 hours on the yellow H bug and sold it at a loss. Ugh...

Then, I happily found Mowers Direct and was... more

Ariens Zoom 42" Zero Turn
I have just used the mower a couple of times, I'm getting the beginners learning moments usage, I really like what little mowing I've done, I have lived in this house for 34 years, and always had a nice lawn.

The lawn now looks better cut than it ever has, this mower deck with the support design is great, The cut is flat all over the lawn. I have had good comments from several people. I installed the mulching kit, and it worked great.

I think I will keep it. Wish I had purchased... more

Major Problem
This is a nice mower but it has one major problem. If you sit in one spot for more than 5 seconds, the exhaust and heat from the muffler burn the grass. It takes a couple of days for the grass to turn brown and then you can see the outline of the muffler and where the exhaust discharged. This mower definitely needs a heat shield around the muffler.
Pros: Easy To Use
Cons: Needs A Muffler Heat Shield

Ariens Zoom 42 Inch Ztr Model 915159 Mower
Did lots and lots of research on all 42 inch ZTR mowers made. Although they all cut your grass, some just do a better job than others. I visited places that sold different makes and models of mowers that fell into the price that I wanted to pay.

I looked at things like quality of materials used, workmanship, company past history and reviews of person that has owned and used the mower. I paid attention to weather it had two cutting blades or three. I definitely had to have one with three... more

Good little mower. We bought this model for cutting between the head stones-cuts well. HOWEVER lately after about 60 hours of mowing the blade spindle bearings are "whining"- indicating they are in need of replacement. We have 3 other brands of zero turn mowers and they ALL have grease fittings for lubricating the spindles ALAS this model does not have fittings so no regular "preventative" maintenance is available. We purchased this model at a Home Depot early this... more

Love My Mower
So far I have only used my mower once, but I love it, came fast, had it on the grass in a few hours, all u do is cut off the wooden pallets, put gas in the tank and she will fire right up. I was only missing one screw for the handle bars. Mowers Direct is great, good prices, no taxes, no shipping and even save money if you send a check. I was not too happy about paying a lift fee, but by writing a check for full payment the cash back was my lift fee charge. I will by direct again in future... more

Very Good Machine, Cuts Very Well And Easy.
The truck dropped it off at 9:30 AM, at 10:20 I started it and took my first ride. Some advise, don't try to take the crate apart. Get a recip. saw and cut the crate off in pieces, pull both bypass levers out and lock in place, then push the machine off the pallet by hand. Piece of cake.
