Toro GT2200 (50") 25-HP Garden Tractor (2009 Model)

The 50" cut lawn tractor was purchased to speed the cutting of about 2 acres of grass.
The lawn is very flat and the lawn tractor has had a problem with the transmission on a regular basis.
There is a problem with going forward, and reverse functions fine.
The transmission was initially replaced under warranty after one season of grass cutting.
The lawn tractor is not used in winter, so it is not used to push or throw snow.
It is used for cutting grass only, and the transmission keeps failing.
The lawn tractor is out of warranty and we have been told there will be about a $500 bill to replace the transmission.
When the unit operates, it cuts grass very well, but it is ridiculous to have to replace a transmission every 2 years.
There appears to be some sort of design flaw with the transmission.
Maybe Toro is trying to save money by using a universal transmission for the small and large models of the lawn tractors.
The local Toro dealer in our area does not even sell this size lawn tractor any longer---there is probably a reason for this.

MD RESPONDS: This unit, even though it is a closeout, still comes with a full 2 year Factory Warranty. Your local dealer may have found that they would rather sell the 50" Zero Turn- they are very poplar.

Toro has tailors their transmissions to different models; that way they can get the best performance from each unique setup. There is not a "universal" transmission from the factory.

The failure rate you describe is unusual. There may have been a problem with the initial warranty repair/replacement of the transmission. We suggest contacting Toro Tech Support at (888) 384-9939 so they can review your case.

The mower deck set up is a bit cheap. I have owned my GT2200 for 4 years now and I am on my 4th mower belt and my second transmission belt. One month after I bought it, I had to replace the spring on the mower deck (under warranty).

The tractor cuts nicely- except if the lawn is a little bit wet then the mower clumps and spits, and needs constant cleaning. When it is working and the lawn is perfectly dry, it mows great. Don't look for the utmost in dependability here.
