Q: I know I have read the answer somewhere -

#1 - But, what is the absolute minimum width for the door to store the 50 inch 24hp time-cuter (Model 74632)

#2 On a small yard, would there be a real advantage of the 50 inch over the 42 inch?

A: John - the minimum width on this zero turn mower is 54.6". So you would need a door opening of at least 56 or 57 inches to get this mower through. As for whether you are better off with a 42" or a 50" mower deck, it all depends on the property you will be mowing. If it is a "wide open" space without a lot of landscaping or obstacles, the 50" mower will get the job done faster. If you do have tree's, landscaping or other obstacles to maneuver around, the 42" deck model is probably a better option for property of less than 2 acres. It will be easier to mow around your landscaping, and on a 2 acres or less parcel, it should only take you about 15 minutes longer to mow with a 42" deck than with a 50" deck.

Q: Does installing the mulching kit on the Toro TimeCutter SS4235 increase the final operating width more than the stated specification of 43.5"?

A: Jim - the mulch kit on a Toro SS series TimeCutter zero turn mower mounts totally on the inside of the mower deck, so the mulch kit would not have any effect on the overall width of the mower.

Q: I have a hilly treed lot which everyone I talk to including dealers tell me to get a zero turn. Which would be better zero turn or tractor.

A: If you have a lot of tree's and other obstacles to mow around, a zero turn is a superior option to a lawn tractor. You will find that it is MUCH easier to maneuver a zero turn around tree's and other obstacles, and you will be able to mow much closer to these obstacles as well. As for the hills, a lot depends on which zero turn you consider. A narrow, wheel base zero turn (46" deck width or less) is going to operate about the same as a lawn tractor in terms of traction on hills. Once you get into a larger zero turn (48" or above), the wheel base on these mowers tend to be wider, and thus afford improved manuverability and traction on uneven mowing surfaces. If the hills in your yard have inclines of greater than 20 degrees, you will probably experience some traction issues with either a tractor or a zero turn - especially if the grass is wet. But bottom line, a zero turn is a better option for mowing a hilly piece of property than a lawn tractor.

Q: I just read about the Timecutter SS5060 on the site. What's your experience with the optional recycler kits? When grass is thick at peak growing season, does it clog? Do you have to mow very slowly? Does it cover the side discharge hole or still come out there?

A: When you are using a mulching kit, the blades and deck can become clogged if the grass is high, so usually you would have to mow at a slower rate. One way to stop this from happening is mowing more frequently, but you could also mow at a lower level to begin with and then make adjustments as you go.

When using a mulching kit, you would not be using the side discharge anymore. You would use the baffle that comes with the kit and all clippings would stay contained within the deck. This would keep your clippings smaller and provide the ground with nutrients.

Q: I own a piece of property on a lake in SC. Part of the property is hilly with a combination of Zoysia and St. Augustine (yeah, strange combination). The other part is "owned" by the Corps of Engineers, but I have to maintain it. I'm not allowed to plan grass, and have to have so many trees per foot. Needless to say, some grass still grows between the trees, and has to be cut regularly. The area has lots of roots and sticks. This area is too large to maintain with a weedeater and too difficult to cut with a pushmower. I am looking for a riding lawnmower that can handle hills and some debris. I'd perfer a ZTR, because the lawn tractor I used before slid on the hill, but am open to any suggestions. Thanks in advance for the help!
