Q: What hydro drive system does the ss5000 have? I know the MX 5060 has the 2800 series. There is no mention of the durability or model of transaxles for the ss5000 or ss5060. How are the transmissions different on the ss5000 models compared to the mx5060 model.
Thanks

by Tom from Illinois on August 13, 2014

A: Tom - both the Toro SS5000 and the SS5060 use the ZT2200 transmission, also known as the EZT.
by Jose, Product Expert
Q: Was looking at Toro lawn mowers SS5000 series and Toro series SS5060. Besides the price, one being $400.00 more than the other what are the difference between these two machines?
by John Mccleary from South Carolina on November 07, 2013

A: John - the Toro SS5060 (74632) is basically the same mower as the SS5000, but it is a full-featured model with a number of added accessories that are not included on the SS5000 model. The SS5060 includes an engine guard, a foot-assisted height of cut adjustment pedal, an anti-vibration floor mat, an hour meter and armrests as standard equipment. These would all be "extra" on the SS5000. The SS5060 also has a premium grade, extra tall contoured seat. The seat on the SS5000 is the standard extra tall seat.
by Jose, Product Expert
Q: Just ordered a Toro TimeCutter zero turn mower. What type gas does it use? regular or supreme?
by John Strickland from Florida on November 02, 2013

A: John - you should use regular grade 87 octane gas. The higher grade gas is just a waste of money - it will not improve engine performance. Also, make sure the regular grade 87 octane gas you use does not have an ethanol content of more than 10%.
by Jose, Product Expert
Q: Looking for rear engine guard for a Toro 50" Timecutter ss5000 model 74631
by Ron from Maine on October 05, 2013

A: Ron - sorry, but Toro does not offer a rear engine guard that is compatible with the 50-inch, SS series TimeCutter zero turn mowers.
by Jose, Product Expert
Q: Is the Toro SS5060 delivered assembled?
by Michael from North Carolina on September 19, 2013

A: For the most part yes. The assembly needed is going to be minor and for shipping reasons. The seat will need to be put on as well as the steering sticks need to be put into their proper position. Other than this it is connecting the negative battery cable and gas and you are ready to go. I would say the most difficult part is just getting it out of the shipping crate and even this is not difficult.
by Jose, Product Expert
Q: Is the floor plate removable in order to have easy access to the center blade spindle and belt maintenance?
by James Griffin from Texas on June 29, 2013

A: James - the floor plate is NOT removable on any of the Toro TimeCutter zero turn mowers, including the SS5000.
by Jose, Product Expert
Q: How is this mower cleaned?

by Jim Thompson from Wisconsin on June 27, 2013

A: Jim - there is a deck wash out port on the mower deck that allows you to connect a garden hose and spray the underside of the deck with water if you wish to clean it in this fashion.
by Jose, Product Expert
Q: I know I have read the answer somewhere -

#1 - But, what is the absolute minimum width for the door to store the 50 inch 24hp time-cuter (Model 74632)

#2 On a small yard, would there be a real advantage of the 50 inch over the 42 inch?

by John Ballard from Texas on July 10, 2011

A: John - the minimum width on this zero turn mower is 54.6". So you would need a door opening of at least 56 or 57 inches to get this mower through. As for whether you are better off with a 42" or a 50" mower deck, it all depends on the property you will be mowing. If it is a "wide open" space without a lot of landscaping or obstacles, the 50" mower will get the job done faster. If you do have tree's, landscaping or other obstacles to maneuver around, the 42" deck model is probably a better option for property of less than 2 acres. It will be easier to mow around your landscaping, and on a 2 acres or less parcel, it should only take you about 15 minutes longer to mow with a 42" deck than with a 50" deck.
by Jose, Product Expert
Q: Does installing the mulching kit on the Toro TimeCutter SS4235 increase the final operating width more than the stated specification of 43.5"?
by Jim from Colorado on June 22, 2011

A: Jim - the mulch kit on a Toro SS series TimeCutter zero turn mower mounts totally on the inside of the mower deck, so the mulch kit would not have any effect on the overall width of the mower.
by Jose, Product Expert
Q: I have a hilly treed lot which everyone I talk to including dealers tell me to get a zero turn. Which would be better zero turn or tractor.
by Randy from Tennessee on May 01, 2011

A: If you have a lot of tree's and other obstacles to mow around, a zero turn is a superior option to a lawn tractor. You will find that it is MUCH easier to maneuver a zero turn around tree's and other obstacles, and you will be able to mow much closer to these obstacles as well. As for the hills, a lot depends on which zero turn you consider. A narrow, wheel base zero turn (46" deck width or less) is going to operate about the same as a lawn tractor in terms of traction on hills. Once you get into a larger zero turn (48" or above), the wheel base on these mowers tend to be wider, and thus afford improved manuverability and traction on uneven mowing surfaces. If the hills in your yard have inclines of greater than 20 degrees, you will probably experience some traction issues with either a tractor or a zero turn - especially if the grass is wet. But bottom line, a zero turn is a better option for mowing a hilly piece of property than a lawn tractor.
by Jose, Product Expert
Q: I just read about the Timecutter SS5060 on the site. What's your experience with the optional recycler kits? When grass is thick at peak growing season, does it clog? Do you have to mow very slowly? Does it cover the side discharge hole or still come out there?
by Eric from Illinois on March 26, 2011

A: When you are using a mulching kit, the blades and deck can become clogged if the grass is high, so usually you would have to mow at a slower rate. One way to stop this from happening is mowing more frequently, but you could also mow at a lower level to begin with and then make adjustments as you go.

When using a mulching kit, you would not be using the side discharge anymore. You would use the baffle that comes with the kit and all clippings would stay contained within the deck. This would keep your clippings smaller and provide the ground with nutrients.

Thanks,

Q: I own a piece of property on a lake in SC. Part of the property is hilly with a combination of Zoysia and St. Augustine (yeah, strange combination). The other part is "owned" by the Corps of Engineers, but I have to maintain it. I'm not allowed to plan grass, and have to have so many trees per foot. Needless to say, some grass still grows between the trees, and has to be cut regularly. The area has lots of roots and sticks. This area is too large to maintain with a weedeater and too difficult to cut with a pushmower. I am looking for a riding lawnmower that can handle hills and some debris. I'd perfer a ZTR, because the lawn tractor I used before slid on the hill, but am open to any suggestions. Thanks in advance for the help!
by Chris Norman from South Carolina on March 24, 2011

A: Thanks for your inquiry. This mower will handle your application with no problem. This mower cuts very accurate and is very durable with the ability to stand up to the toughest terrains.

Toro Timecutter Ss5060
Never owned a ZTR, done research online and read reviews. I went to Tractor Supply and LOWE'S and looked at their versions of the John Deere and Cub Cadet. Had planned to buy a less expensive Tractor type mower. I did not want to spend $5,000.00 to $7,000.00 on a mower for a yard which was less than 1 acre in size. After reading the reviews about the John Deere from Lowe's and the Cub Cadet from Tractor Supply it made me look for another source. This is when I found this web site and started... more

Dad's Toy
My dad had gotten beat for the very last time by his Cub Cadet riding lawnmower earlier this month. My Dad is 79 yrs old and still very active. He likes caring for their land but getting around the trees and landscaped areas was taking too much time and effort. I called just as my Dad was expressing his disgust. I immediately started looking for what his biggest wish was, to own a zero-turn riding lawnmower. In 2hrs of research on your website my parents were able to shop with me and choose the... more

Pulley Bearing Failure
I purchased a ss5060 zero turn mower in may of 2012 from an on-line dealer. After 2 seasons of use, an idler pulley seized and destroyed itself taking out the belt in the process. I took the deck in to the local authorized dealer for what appeared to me to be an obvious warranty repair. I was shocked to find that the dealer could refuse to do the work if the mower was not bought at his store. He looked at the pulley that failed and all the other pulleys and said that they all were damaged by... more

I love this mower. Maintenance is easy and it mows like a dream. Should have bought one sooner. Mow about an acre or more and driving around trees and stuff is easy.

Big Time Saver
Delivery was great. Driver helped me open box & set it up for my height. Steering took some practice to get the feel of it. Driver even waited for me to practice driving some & took away all the box debris!

Mowing my yard used to take over 2 hours with push mower (about 2-1/2 hrs). Now it takes about 20 minutes and it goes so close to the edges that I only need another 5 minutes to push mow or weed eat the boundary spots around the shed & house.
What a great difference.

This is the best mower my husband has ever owned, he constantly talk's about it. My husband said he love's his old mower's JohnDeere's and one Troy-Bilt, but nothing, nothing handle's, cut's like the Toro Timecutter SS5060.

As Good As I Expected.
After reading reviews and checking specs on mowers from probably 20 websites, I decided to go with the Toro SS5060. It seemed to be what I need, and for the right price.

I have used the mower 4 times so far, and I've been totally satisfied. I have a 4-acre yard that I mow weekly. It had previously taken me 3-3 1/2 hours to do the job. This mower has cut the job down to about 2 hours.

My yard is not even close to being level, but the mower has handled it well. The cut, to this point, is... more

Very Pleased
I purchased this mower at the very beginning of the mowing season this year. Based on the size mower I needed and the price I could afford I had narrowed my choices down to the Toro SS5050 or the 54" Husquvarna, and the higher rating given by the product experts here at Mowers Direct to the Toro plus bad past experience with Husquvarna mowers made me decide on the SS5060.

Ordering was easy, can't beat the price with no taxes or freight, and it arrived within a week. I had it running an... more

Tore Timecutter Ss5060
I ordered the mower on a Saturday. The mower was to be delivered on Tuesday. ABF Freight delivered the mower on Friday. It seams the mower spent a few days on a dock in Ohio. It was worth the wait. The mower works great. The packaging was a pain to remove, but the mower was in great shape when I finally got it out. I have a little over an acre to mow and it takes less than 45 minutes to finish. I had a Craftsman 46 inch tractor and it took twice that to mow.
