Q: How do you sharpen blades on a reel mower?
by Tammy from California on June 10, 2011

A: Tammy - we sell a reel mower blade sharpening kit reel mower sharpening kit This is probably the easiest way to sharpen your reel mower blades if you want to do it yourself.

Q: Hi there, I am interested in buying a reel lawn mower and don’t know which one to buy. I live in South Florida (Miami). I don’t want to spend money on gas and I definitely don’t like fumes. I heard our grass down here is difficult to cut with reel lawnmowers and wanted to know which one you would recommend. Thanks again.
by Antonio from Florida on June 10, 2011

A: Antonio - If you live in South Florida, chances are your lawn is a St. Augustine type of grass. And yes, this is some of the toughest grass to cut with a reel mower. If you have a thick grass like a St.Augustine, a Zoysia, or a Bermuda, you are going to need a heavier weight reel mower to plow through the thicker blades of grass, and that means it's going to be harder to push. I would recommend the Fiskers Momentum reel mower. Fiskars reel mower The Fiskars weighs more than a conventional reel mower, but the forward position of the reel and the versa-cut height adjustment will probably give you the best performance when it comes to managing thick grass like you have.

Tranny problems, model 20011, Personnal Pace

I purchased this model in 2003 and was very happy with it for the first three years and then things turned sour.

I followed the factory spec's religiously, washing the undercarriage the way they stated and greased the rear drive pinion gear manually as they described.

Since then, I've had to replace the pinion gear three times and now have to replace the entire tranny. With all these repairs, I have spent enough to buy another new unit.

My dealer now says I shouldn't have washed the undercarriage at all. That forced water into the tranny and rui... more

Love my reel mower!

I have an old model Scotts 20" Classic mower I use, looks the same as this one.

My back lawn is about 40' by 60' and front is 15' by 15'. It does a great job - no, not as perfect as a gas mower but pretty close. It doesn't like tall grass but it can handle it, you may have to hit a line twice but no big deal.

It misses tall dandelions in my back yard (no weed killer there, I have a dog). I have a sweet Stihl electric trimmer that cleans up the edges.

Mowing time is about the same as if I was using a gas mower. And it's quiet with no exhaust.... more

Worth it.

My new mower has been pretty good. I have found that I have to go over the same area more than once to get an even cut, but admittedly the grass was a bit long to begin with.

I love that I can go out an mow without having to check oil or gas, and I always struggled with starting the pull start on our previous 2 gas powered mowers. I am only 5'1, and though I am strong for my size, my arm does not reach the length of the pull strings. Now I just pick up sticks and pull the mower out of the garage and I'm ready to go.

I also like that I am using a greener method of ... more

Mower is okay, but the handles are defective

The mower itself is okay, but the handles are defective, part number 31098-3 breaks in approximately one season. If you have a bumpy lawn, it will break even faster. Unfortunately, there are two 31098-3 parts in the upper handle assembly, one on the left and one on the right.

I duct taped the two cracked pieces together and modified how I pushed the mower. The handles fail simply because they are cheap, thin aluminum. If you buy this product, be prepared to fool around with handles.
