Q: What is the benefit of a flail reel ? Not sure what it is. I use to have Parker power rakes back in the 1980's
by Lonnie Douglass from Colorado on July 24, 2011

A: Lonnie - a flail reel design is one of three standard options available for dethatchers. Here is a brief explanation of each type: Tine Reel - digs out the heaviest thatch allowing lawn to breathe and is used for re-seeding preparation. Knife Reel - stationary knife for multipurpose use for dethaching and re-seeding. Flail Reel -
digs out the worst thatch while giving the maximum durability where major lawn repair is needed. The major advantage of a flail reel dethatcher is its durability when digging out heavy patches of thatch. By the way, these various reel assemblies are interchangeable on the Parker Thatch-O-Matic dethatchers.

Q: are either the flail-reel or tine-reel walk-behind dethatcher SELF-PROPELLED?
120# ... yikes!
i need to dethatch my zoyzia lawn, but have no room to maneuver a pull-behind, these look promising.

by Maggie from Missouri on May 21, 2011

A: Maggie - Neither of the Parker walk behind dethatchers are self propelled. I know 120 pounds seems like a lot of weight, but these are only slightly heavier than a typical walk behind mower, which weighs 80 to 90 pounds. The 10" rear wheels with the sealed bearings will also make this easier to push and maneuver.

Parkerthatcher
I purchased a Parker Thatcher back in the 1970's. It was blue in color and was powered by a 5 HP B & S engine. It worked very well - however adjusting the tine depth was a little time consuming. The new thatcher has a wonderful Subaru engine and the lever to adjust the tines is a great improvement. I sold my old thatcher to a landscaper for $500 in the spring of 2008. I paid $500 for it back in the 70's!!! I thought Parker had gone out of business as I searched for another thatcher. ... more
