| Mowers Direct Recommendation |
| By Mowers Direct |
Honda makes one heck of an engine. They also make lawn mowers.
However, a Honda engine on an MTD lawn mower isn't much different from a Honda engine on a Honda lawn mower.
Frankly, the biggest difference is the price tag. This MTD Platinum Series 11A-542Q724 has the same quality engine at a fraction of the price. |

| Honda engine rocks |
| By Dan from (Westerville, OH) |
I was given an older MTD mower with 5.5 hp engine that looks just like this mower, but without the additional side discharge, and the deck is red instead of silver.
It has been passed between three friends, mowing one third to one half acre lawns. The deck is dented on the front, the side of the deck has been badly scraped, but the Honda engine still starts the first pull!
Concerning B&S engines mentioned in another post: are you changing your oil?
I keep my blades sharp and change oil at least twice per season. My B&S on my Snapper mower has points and a pulsa-jet carb (can you say old?), but still starts and runs fine on the third or forth pull (number of pulls due to the pulsa-jet?) and does not burn oil.
My neighbor also uses B&S engine lawn mowers, does not change his oil, and replaces his mowers every 2-3 years. |

| Good Mower, but NOT commercial grade engine |
| By Kirk from (Sacramento, CA) |
I ordered Model 11A-542Q724 on Amazon from a different vendor. The description said OHV engine--anybody in the business knows that the Honda GXV series OHV engines are the commercial grade and the GCV OHC engines are the consumer-homeowner grade which sells on price to compete the Briggs and Stratton.
I was disappointed when my mower arrived with the GCV engine when I wanted the commercial grade engine. I'm not sure if this was a mistake by MTD itself or the vendor. The misrepresentation may have been unintentional, but was disappointing.
Despite all this, I've worn out at least 6 BS engines and the 1 Honda GCV engine I purchased held up better and was more reliable, but started smoking after a couple years hard use like the BS engines.
If you mow a lot of weeds like I do, the commercial grade engine is worth it. |
