  1 Question
Q: Good morning,

I see that the Honda HRX217HZA has a non-metal mowing deck (with a lifetime warranty). What material is it made out of and on an uneven surface will the deck flex? Thanks

by Floyd Sandlin from Washington on August 11, 2012

A: Floyd - the mower deck on the Honda HRX217HZA is made from "NEXITE", which is a polymer material that is very similar to what is used to make football helmets and car bumpers. The mower will not flex when mowing uneven surfaces.

Hrx217hya Is Worth It!
For me this was my first Honda mower and my first self propelled mower. I shopped around a lot after i had problems with my tractor and bought a push reel mower while i found the right gas mower while it cut well if the grass got too long i was in trouble.

I settled on the Honda even though I still think it is just a little more than i would like to have paid. Ordered from PED because they didn't seem like a fly by night place. They had all the details clear and a great selection. Order... more

6 Months And The Honeymoon Was Over
Was great for the first six months. Then, the auto choke failed and starting was a daunting task. Followed fuel recommendations by using premium fuel with added stabilizer and refueled after each use so tank was always full. It requires around 30 pulls before it will start if you are lucky. Once started, it runs great. Contacted local dealer and they have a 4 week backlog of Honda mowers needing work so I' m definitely not sold on Honda being reliable. When I walked into the dealer service... more

Great Mower With Great Features But It's Heavy
I want to start by saying that today was my first lawn cutting experience with my new mower. I read the instructions thoroughly, filled oil and gas, adjusted handles and wheel hight. The mower started with the first pull, I love the blade brake system.

I decided to set the mower to half bag, half mulch. Glad I read the instructions, it only took a few minutes and I was good to go. This mower works best at straight line cutting up and down hills. I figured out how to back up (with the blade... more

High Expectations...
And they were met. After using a JD for the last 11 years, decided to make a switch to something that bagged easier than what I had. This mower has a very easy on-off bagging system. The JD was terrible at this.

The clip director is an awesome feature. The mower started on the first pull out of the box and has done it every use. No priming is nice too.

Wasn't really interested in the blade stop when buying but glad it has it.

Don't have anything negative to say about the mower. Does... more

A Good Mower But For The Price It Should Be Better
It was time to replace my 23 year old Bolens. I paid $520 for it when I purchased it. I did a lot of research and landed on the Honda line. I paid $100 to upgrade to this model for a couple of features: 1) The hydrostatic drive. 2) The blade brake. They are worth the money. My backyard is on a hill and the rear wheel drive is a huge plus. It does a great job pushing this heavy mower up the hill. The Bolens was a front wheel drive and I was sold on it until I got this Honda. The hydrostatic... more

Wow!!!!!
I was looking at this mower and looked at Home Depot and they had this one. After looking at the features and trying it out I wanted it. So I went looking online and put best prices on Honda 217 and this company came up. So I called and spent 20 minutes talking with the tech and he told me things I missed at Home Depot. So I ordered on a Thursday afternoon and it came yesterday, Monday.

Today I filled the oil and added the gas and it started on the first pull!!! It cut wonderful and it's a... more

A Small Tribute
Hey, this is a Honda, a tribute to W. Edwards Deming. That is why Japanese industry is that reliable. When they say easy start, it starts easily. When you expect it to operate as the manual shows it does.

I suggest as I do on all my engines, after the break in time, change the oil to Mobil I synthetic,0-40, another tribute to American ingenuity. Your engine will last decades. I buy two sets of blades, the spare set can be sharpened at your leisure to perfection. Height adjustment is... more

Honda Workhorse
I am just going to reiterate what others have noted in their reviews here on Mowers Direct and other review websites or forum boards.

I purchased the HYA model with the Roto-stop feature and glad I did. The engine is powerful enough to comb through my very thick tall (and I mean tall) Fescue grass with ease. Up and down hills never a problem for my .5 acre of lush heavily fertilized lawn. The Nexite deck is growing on me as it does not seem to clog up like a steel or aluminum deck. The... more

Hrx 217hya Is Tops!
This is my fourth Honda mower in this line and it continues to outperform other brands at lower costs. The walking speed setting makes using the mower fun. The power increase from 160cc to 190cc was a great upgrade as my lawn is course (on the light hay side) and this mower has no problem cutting it. Another great feature is the manual height setting and a constant clearance in height front to back that avoids catching the tops of sprinkler heads on the under carriage as you mow.
Pros: Features, Reliable, Exceeded Expectations, I'd Buy It Again

Love Love Love This Mower
In the past I've had Toro self propelled, with Honda engines of course. (3) alway have a spare. They are not near as fast as the Honda. I cut about 3 times a week and I love to walk fast. The handle was difficult until I got the hang of it. love the power and fastness of this mower. I do however think it was a little expensive. If it last 10-12 years like the Toro's, I'll have another one.
Pros: I'd Buy It Again, Exceeded Expectations, Light Weight, Fast
Cons: Expensive, Handle Was A Little Difficult To Use
