Q: Is this a fixed wide-open throttle, or is the user able to adjust the throttle from idling (let it warm up a little) to fully open?
by Tom from Montana on April 03, 2016

A: Tom - the Cub Cadet 159cc engine on this mower has a fixed throttle setting. The throttle is not adjustable.
by Jose, Product Expert
Q: I have seen a few complaints about the process of driving the machine? You have to push the handle grip forwrard to go forward??? can you explain to me what i will need to do to make this thing move forward?
by Todd from Michigan on August 13, 2014

A: Todd - the drive control on the Cub Cadet SC500Z mower is located on the underside of the upper handle. To engage the drive, you squeeze the drive lever against the upper handle to engage the drive; release it to slow down or stop mower from propelling.

Decent Mower
I bought this mower for a change from the normal Toro's I've bought in the past and the Cub Cadet name. First off, right out of the box I noticed that the front swivel tires didn't seem right when I unlocked them from straight mode. Sure enough the first time I mowed with it, the metal brackets that hold the wheels straight or allow them to swivel would catch the metal swing arms when it was in the swivel mode.

So when I'd try to turn the mower without picking up the mower like you usually... more

Cheap Build
When I first bought this lawn mower I loved it. It was delivered on time and started right up. Problem is it is cheaply built. Too much plastic. I have replaced the side discharge three times and have come to the conclusion that I will just rivet the current one to the mower when it falls off.

The electric starter is plastic and has busted twice. I had to replace the battery after the first season. Now it won't pull or electric start. I am now having to take it to a dealer for the third... more

Excellent Mower
Great mower. It starts easily, and powers through the lawn with ease. The only slight drawback is the way the handle folds for storage (you have to completely remove a bolt from each side, then fold the handle).
Pros: Easy To Use, Fast, High Quality, Powerful
Cons: Handle does not fold easily for storage

Mowing A Smallish Yard
The Cadet was relatively easy to assemble. It seems to be working well other than the front swivel wheels do not swivel so easily. We applied some lubricant and it improved, but they are manufactured with quite a bit of play and no grease fittings, so they tend to bind and impede your change of direction.

They would work much better if they were mounted in bearings or bronze sleeves with grease fittings. I thought the whole idea of swivel wheels was to make it easier to turn.
Pros: Price, Quiet, Plre, Prepackaged Engine Oil
Cons: Difficult To Use, Wheels That Don't Swivel

Ok Mower
I bought this mower for a project because of the swivel front casters. Unfortunately they are very cheaply made and don't swivel easily and bind up. Also the plastic on this mower gives a lot of flex to the chassis not sure if this will be a good thing long term.

I haven't used the mower much since its spring and I just purchased it. The mower is easy to start and cuts nicely. I am just disappointed in how cheaply it is constructed.

Exactly What I Wanted In A Self Propelled Mower
This is my first experience with a self propelled mower which took a bit of getting used to, but overall it's fine. The best feature is that tight turning radius and that's what I as after.
Pros: Easy To Use, Features, I'd Buy It Again, Reliable

Throttle Cable Issues
Almost two years old. Last year the throttle cable broke. $22.00 for part and $9.00 shipping. (3-16-16). Now 11-17-16 and having to buy another. $22.00 and only $5.99 shipping. Haven't figured that out. Called customer service.

You know how that went. Don't want a refund, just let engineering know of bad parts. When the mower is running it a good mower. Parts are not good. Still getting use to rear wheel drive instead of front wheel. Popping up front wheels on take off..
Pros: Price, Easy To Use, Features, Light Weight

Cub Cadet Sc500z
I have only used it three times so far and it has preformed great. The front casters are great and work very well. I can see where the adjustment of front wheels might be a pain for some but it truly isn't a big deal just it takes a few mins to adjust, and the design of the mower on casters there is no way to adjust the height with one lever.

I can see where you will won't to replace the wing nut as it is caste plastic around a nut. During mowing wet grass it will clog due to the drive system... more

Cheaply Made Don't Buy
I did a review after I bought it but feel compelled to do another after a full year of use.
First off the mower does start in one or two pulls but after the 3rd cut It puffs white smoke when I start it after its been sitting maybe a week between cuts.

The front casters:
The bracket on the one caster wasn't welded, and on the second time using the mower, the arm started to bending away from bracket. (I welded it)
The Bracket itself that connect the casters to the body of the mower deck was... more

Worst Mower I've Had
I have 2 of these mowers they are nothing but junk...bought both in March 2016. One has been in shop twice for a knocking motor and transmission. The other one has a broken wheel, so they are both in shop at this time. I've had to replace cables a number of times....

Wrong Mower
I thought I could finish the year with the mower I had, wrong. I looked at several places for the Cub Cadet mower with no luck, so I ordered it online. When the mower was delivered the wrong mower was sent, no self propelled or any of the fancy gadgets I wanted.

I was in a situation were I had to accept it because of previous engagement at my house and the amount of time to ship the correct mower I had to keep the mower delivered. I am very disappointed because I know this will be a... more
