Junk Mower
Mowed 3 times then the back wheel broke. Should have read the reviews on this mower before I got one.

Not Happy!!!
I have owned this mower for all of 4 months now and have experienced just about everything that all the other reviewers have. I have spent most of my morning outside trying to get this thing to start with no luck... I do agree that the back wheels are crap..they always look as though at any moment they are going to wobble right off. The first week I used this mower the belt for the self propel drive kept slipping off. This past month it has been stalling out continuously a few seconds after starting up....now it wont start period!!! Such a waste of money.

Avoid
I wish I had seen this page before I bought this thing. Seemed solid, American made, etc. I have used this for 1 month now and it is extremely unreliable. Walmart won't take it back for reasons discussed above. Since the grass keeps growing I have no place in my busy life for a machine that works only some of the time. It stalls constantly and won't restart. The self propelled mechanism is very cheap - hit a branch the 2nd week and now the wheels sometimes turn, sometimes not. Unless you have a tiny yard with no trees, just skip this one and save yourself a lot of trouble.

Good Experience
The mower has worked great right out of the box. No problems. Started on first pull as well.
Bought the 2 year extended warranty from a big box store for an extra $20.00. So if I have any problem I'm covered for a few years.

JUNK
Bought one and within one month it had many problems. Brought it back and exchanged it for the same one... one month later same thing! Belt snapped, pull start snapped, back wheels fell off... and so on. DO NOT BUY THIS MOWER!!!!! On top of everything, the company that makes it wants me to pay for the service to fix it. I don't even want the JUNK! Not worth fixing, already had two of them.
MD RESPONDS: Brute mowers come with a Factory Warranty. Just give them a call at 800-743-4115 to find the Authorized Service center closest to you.
All mower warranties cover manufacturer's defect, not wear and tear, but since the unit is only a month old it would be hard to put all the issues on use and abuse...
Be sure to ask for a couple locations; it sounds like the one you took it to wasn't willing to do the warranty work.

We were looking for an inexpensive self-propelled lawn mower.
We love it so far. It has enough power for a self-propelled mower and I love the front wheel drive so I can lift the front end to turn it and get around things.
Happy Customers!

Junk
I bought this Brute model last year. It worked OK at first, but this year the front drive wheels alternately turn and shut off even when the drive handle is engaged.
It is very hard to turn or maneuver in tight spaces, and the wheels wobble and look like they might come off at any time. The handle drops parallel to the ground before you lift the front wheels.
I echo the comment of an earlier post -- I got this thing from a big box store for about $300 - it is junk.

Buyer Beware
I bought one of these Brutes just yesterday (6-27-10) and gassed it up and ran a couple of paths over my urban lawn today when the front wheel drive started clunking with every revolution (of the belt?). When pushing it with engine off, across the pavement, the wheels would actually stop turning at this regular interval.
I find out that the big box store where I purchased it will not accept gasoline machine returns if not in its original box, if it has had gasoline in it, or if it was used (any of these three conditions)! What the heck?
Took the Brute to a licensed repair this afternoon after getting nowhere with Briggs and Stratton over the phone and was told that it would cost at least a $30 inspection fee even though it was under warranty.
I just bought a piece of trash! Beware!!
MD RESPONDS: There are a couple things going on here. It really is against Federal Law to ship any engine that has had gasoline in it; that goes for every vendor, not just the big box stores.
You did the correct thing by calling Briggs & Stratton (Brute is one of their product lines) and getting the closest Authorized Service location. You could also check their online Service Locator for other repair shops in your area (there are 3) and call them to see if they will check out your mower without charging you a fee on top of the warranty repair.

During the first year of use. the Brute performed well. The second season, however, things started to go downhill.
Height adjusters would not maintain their adjustment, the drive torque cable stretched and lost its ability to self propel.
The worst part was the decking around the motor mounts cracked. $300.00 gone and a year and one half later... I am searching for a better mower.
Please note, this mower was bought at Wal-Mart. Never again; buyer beware!

Returned the day after I bought it
I bought one of these in the summer of '09 and took it back the day after I bought it.
It is a front wheel drive and it didn't have enough weight on the front end to keep the wheels from spinning on a slight incline. It also was not a variable speed, and was so slow, I had to push it most of the time.
