Briggs And Stratton Mowers Are Fraud
I own a few mowers and this one keeps on falling apart. It is according to the model number sticker a 22" mower but when I went to replace the blade it took a 21". All the bolts rattle loose, the wheels fall off and will not stay at the cut setting, The tread on the tires is completely worn off when all my other mowers are hardly worn at all with the same use, The handle broke, The only thing still functioning without repairs is the engine for now. The engine seems a little... more

Junk
less than 10 hours on mower. wheels keep falling off. The muffler fell off and the aluminum threads are striped out. The gas cap will not stay on tight enough and fuel splashes out on the engine..

Has anyone started a class action on this piece of work? I hope in the afterlife, the people who are in charge of low quality products have to use there junk forever.

Junk But Don't Blame Brute
This mower says discontinued but the engine and a 675EX model are still being sold. I don't blame Brute on this pile of crap other than for not recalling them. I blame Briggs and Stratton. The first year I had this I got 5 mows in a very small yard and it went poof. Stopped starting. I replaced the spark plug and it ran like a charm and that was the last of the seasons mow.

Winterized and brought it out of winterization for this season. I got two mows out of it and it is dead again. It will... more

Found A Solution To Keep It Running
I too am a dissatisfied customer who bought a Brute self propelled lawn mower two years ago. Mine just started to stall out on me this week. First of all, I am NOT a small engine mechanic, just a 63 year old guy who likes to figure out why things won't work. I took off the cover to the engine (there are two philips head screws on top). With the cover off the engine, I started the mower and with a pair of vise grips, I clamped the safety arm (the thinner rod that you must pull back in order... more

Buyer Beware
Had this lawnmower for 5 weeks and now it is being fixed due to smoking from engine while using. The repair man told me that he has had 15 of these mowers in the shop in the last 8 weeks and they all have the same problems....do not buy this mower was his advice-and mine-had an old Murray machine for years and never had any problems.....
Pros: Light Weight
Cons: Low Quality, Durability

Back Wheel Broke Off, Sputtered Oid
Don't buy this mower! We just bought it earlier, and before husband could finish 1/2 the yard, the wheel fell off. When he went to return it, they said, "You are the 3rd person to bring this mower back and have the rear wheel break off!!" Unbelievable. lol. Don't get it.

Junk
I just purchased a Brute from Menards. BIG MISTAKE, worst lawn mower I ever purchased and Menards has given me nothing but the run around. This may have cost me a couple hundred dollars but it will cost Menards and Brute a lot more with all the BAD P.R. that I will pass on their way.

Brute, Worst Lawnmower On The Market
The first Brute lawnmower we purchased didn't work. AT ALL. We returned it and got suckered into buying a more expensive version. The 2nd one worked for a total of 2 times. On the 3rd time, it would not start. Guess what. It had gone through the oil. A good mower would not have gone through oil after 3 small uses. But now, because the problem was declared to be "lack of lubrication", it is not covered by the warranty. How convenient. This was one huge rip-off. If you are... more

Biggest Piece Of Junk
Haven't had the mower 2 years. From mid first year, it started sputtering, would not start easily. Constantly checking fuel, spark plugs, filter, etc... Sounds very similar to a lot of the other testimonies on here AVOID purchasing this mower. Last time I let the wife go buy a mower while I'm out of town. Wal-Mart has not been helpful and keep pawning us off to Briggs and Stratton. Last time I make any big purchases at Wal-Mart.

Buyer Beware
I bought one of these Brutes just yesterday (6-27-10) and gassed it up and ran a couple of paths over my urban lawn today when the front wheel drive started clunking with every revolution (of the belt?). When pushing it with engine off, across the pavement, the wheels would actually stop turning at this regular interval.

I find out that the big box store where I purchased it will not accept gasoline machine returns if not in its original box, if it has had gasoline in it, or if it was used... more
Jose, the Lawn Mower Expert

J,
There are a couple things going on here. It really is against Federal Law to ship any engine that has had gasoline in it; that goes for every vendor, not just the big box stores.

You did the correct thing by calling Briggs & Stratton (Brute is one of their product lines) and getting the closest Authorized Service location. You could also check their online Service Locator for other repair shops in your area (there are 3) and call them to see if they will check out your mower without charging you a fee on top of the warranty repair.
