Q: What is the difference between Transaxles and hydorstatic transmition on the ZTR mowers? by CK on July 24, 2011
A: Thanks for your inquiry.
The difference between transaxle and hydrostatic transmissions on zero turn mowers is as follows:
The transaxle has the pump and wheel motor in one case. It is belt driven. The hydrostatic is propelled with fluid and a seperate pump. It is not belt driven. by Todd, Product Expert
Q: Todd, if i buy this mower and something goes wrong within the 3 year warranty, how would i get it fixed? by Joe from Connecticut on June 26, 2011
A: Joe - any needed warranty service would be provided by your local Ariens dealer. We have a link on our web site under customer service that would allow you to look up the closest Ariens service centers using your zip code. by Todd, Product Expert
Q: I have a new 2011 Ariens Zoom 42 mower and would like to purchase a sun shade for it, but all that I have found are for 2008 or earlier model years. Is there a sun shade available for the new model? by Gary from Ohio on June 24, 2011
A: Gary - Ariens stopped offering a sun shade for their Zoom series zero turn mowers a couple of years ago. There are a couple of after market sun shades out there that will fit on the newer Ariens Zoom models, but we do not offer one. by Todd, Product Expert
Q: Are zero turn mowers set up to pull say a 17' dump cart for other yard work like conventional riding mowers? by Joe from Pennsylvania on June 23, 2011
A: Joe - the maximum weight that a zero turn mower can "pull" (tow) is typically about 200 - 250 pounds. You could pull a 17 foot dump cart, which weighs about 160 lbs. You just couldn't put a whole lot of "stuff" in the cart. by Todd, Product Expert
Q: the ariens zero turn mowers, do they have snow blowers available? and if so are they easy to mount? just trying to cut back on the number of gas engines to maintain. thanks Troy by Troy Donth from Minnesota on June 11, 2011
A: Troy - Ariens does make a snow blower attachment that mounts to the front of their zero turn mowers. I would say the installation is moderate in terms of ease. We don't stock the snow blower attachment, but we would be able to special order it for you if you decide you want one. To be honest, the snow blower attachment is not a big seller, mostly because of the handling and traction of a zero turn mower on snow and ice. Give us a call if you want to find out more about the Ariens snow blower attachment for their zero turn mowers. by Todd, Product Expert
Q: I've looked at this at home depot and at your competitors wise guys web site and they both have briggs and stratton as the engine your web site says a kohler why is it a different engine for the same mower? by Christi from Texas on May 22, 2011
A: Christi - I can't comment on what our competitor's are showing on their web sites, but if you are looking at a 2011 Ariens Zoom 42 (#915159), the engine on this mower is definitely a 22hp Kohler Courage engine. The 2010 model (#915141) had a 16.5hp Briggs and Stratton engine, but this model is out of production and no longer available. by Todd, Product Expert
Q: I have a 42" front engine tractor currently. I want to cut down mowing time on a 2/3 acre lot. Would a 42" zero turn be recommended? Would 48"+ be overkill? Thanks! by Tim L. from Wisconsin on May 17, 2011
A: Tim - for a lot that is less than 1 acre, you could probably get away with using a 32" or 34" zero turn mower and still cut your mowing time. A 42" model would be plenty big enough. Yes, a 48" model would be more mower than you need for mowing less than one acre. by Todd, Product Expert
Q: Does this Ariens Zoom42 (42") 22HP Zero Turn Lawn Mower (2011 Model) really come with a two-cylinder Kohler engine? Thank you! by Alan Church from South Dakota on May 16, 2011
A: Alan - yes, the Ariens Zoom 42 features a Kohler Courage twin cylinder engine. by Todd, Product Expert
Q: Describe how much assembly is required when this mower is shipped to me? by Bill Moyer from Kansas on April 21, 2011
A: Thanks for your inquiry. The only assembly required is putting on the seat. Then you just have to gas , oil and go!! by Todd, Product Expert
Q: Todd, what is the overall length and width of the 42" machine? by Hollis Earnest from Illinois on March 24, 2011
A: Thanks for your inquiry. The overall length of this model is 64 inches. The overall width of this model is 54 inches. by Todd, Product Expert

Todd's Recommendation
The Ariens Zoom 42 zero turn riding mower provides exceptional cutting performance for an outstanding value.
The Ariens Zoom 42 is an ideal option for homeowners looking to cut a large yard in up to half the time. You can tame up to 2 acres of grass in an hour, and have some fun while you’re doing it, since this mower will not only cut the grass fast, but it will turn on a dime and cruise around your yard at speeds of up to 6mph.
The newly designed platform of the Ariens Zoom 42 offers a lower center of gravity which results in better stability, handling and hill holding capability. This model features the 12-gauge, stamped XLerator™ deck that is uniquely designed to improve cutting performance. Increased airflow and a tunneled cutting area allow for enhanced discharge of clippings while reducing clogging and blow-out.
All of this combined makes small work of the toughest mowing jobs.

Fully satisfied
I'm loving my new zero-radius Ariens mower, even though the property I mow has a few areas of serious pitch. It can be very tough to turn while traveling fast downhill,or even side hill, but I've developed the touch (mostly it means slowing down to almost a stop, then turning) and find that the advantages of the mower (turn on a dime, plenty of horsepower, very comfortable seat (and I weight 220)) to be such that I'm very happy with it.

Traction Is Terrible
This is a great mower for the money. But, if traction is a concern, get something heavier with larger rear tires. Heading downhill? Plan on a long ride. Uphill is OK but stay away from slopes next to ditches and the lake.

Mowers Direct was right on top of getting the item shipped as promised. So far it is a great product, and I would recommend Mowers Direct and Ariens to anybody.

mower
PROS:Mower is easy to drive and makes cutting grass very fast. CONS: This style mower has 3 blades, it is hard to get to them to sharpen. I have an acre to mow, so the blades need sharpening every other time. Mower will not cut wet grass from morning dew gets clogged up. Will not cut very high grass, it leaves long sprigs of grass up still growing.

Very Nice Mower for the Money !!
I have a small landscaping-mowing business and use this mower as an extra and on my own lawn. It works great, fast and leaves a nice cut. Great mower for the money.

Ariens 42" Zero Turn Mower
Scanned Internet for zero turn mowers and finally ended up with this mower at Mowers Direct. Great company and great mower. Placed order on a Monday--mower was delivered the following Thursday--free shipping.
Uncrating the mower was a challenge--very well crated and protected. Other reviews suggested using a Sawsall, which was an excellent suggestion. However, after removing most of the upper portion of the crate, I was still wondering how I was going to get it off the bottom as the tires were wedged between boards. Then along came a meter reader. He offered to help. We removed enough of the boards from the front of the front wheels and we were able to pick up the back of the mower and roll it off the front--be sure to release the rear wheels first by pulling out rods under the engine toward the front of the rear wheels. I would definitely suggest at least two people to uncrate the mower, if possible.
I can't say enough good about this mower. It took only about ten minutes of riding it up and down the street to learn the basics of how to handle it, and by the time I finished mowing the yard, I felt like a pro. According to my neighbor, who knows a great deal about mechanical things, it has all the best features: a Kohler engine, sealed oil system, etc. When I first tried to start the mower, it wouldn't start. I discovered that the brake (yellow handle) needs to be ON in order to start the mower.
My yard is quite sloped in some places. I found that I need to be very careful when turning on the slopes or I would make divits or skid marks.
I never thought that mowing a yard could be so much fun. Can't wait until next Friday.

Great Buy
After comparing various mowers on line and in person, I settled on the ZOOM 42. This size met the requirements of my 1.75 acre yard as well as my price point. I inquired with the company directly to find out if there were "different" series within a model description. The company (which was extremely prompt n getting back to me) assured me that there is no difference in quality, components, or assembly of any of there units and wherever the unit was shipped it is identical to one shipped to a different location. Therefore, find the best price and make the purchase. Have now used it a few times and it is extremely easy to use and has cut my mowing time from 2-1/2 hours to just over one (we have a lot of trees).

Love the mower hate the mulch kit
I purchased an Ariens Zoom 42 from a big box store and the mulch kit from mowers direct. After installing the mulch kit (which requires jacking up the mower and removing the blades - a real pain BTW), I experienced a trail of grass about 2 inches wide trailing from the mower, especially when mowing in a circle (i.e., around trees) . When shopping for the mulch kit, Ariens told me the kit needed an additional part (51522800) which basically are foam block inserts to block the grass leaking through the poorly fitting mulch kit baffle. When I asked Mowers Direct, I was told no additional parts are needed (not true) and the directions they emailed me for installing the mulch kit indicated blade removal was not required (also not true). I have since experimented by stuffing paper towels in the leakage areas and have pretty much stopped the trail of grass. Ariens is sending me the foam kit at no charge, but they tell me I have to remove the mulch kit (a black baffle covering the discharge chute - see photo) which again requires removing the blades (which are torqued to 100 ft-lbs). I have been tempted to just return the mower except that I really love the mower. It has plenty of power, leaves the lawn looking great, is fun to drive and has none of the problems reported about many zero turn mowers.

Mower is pretty good *do not get bagger*
The mower works pretty well. The bagger, however, constantly clogs. It also is a poor design. Debris leaks from the bag chute covering the air intake of the engine. You must constantly clean it or the engine overheats. I would recommend the mulch kit instead of the bagger.

Paint chipping
We got a good deal on the mower. We have only had it a week now and it's running good, BUT the paint is already peeling and chipping off of the engine cover. How can we resolve this issue?

Best Bang For The Buck
I received my mower today, put the control levers in place, filled it with gas and mowed my lawn. This is best mower I have ever bought. I mowed the lawn in half the time. It took on my troy-built, and it was actually fun.

Zero turn is great
I have always wanted a zero turn lawn mower, when I saw this on mowers direct it was such a great price I had to have one. I've used it once and it's great. Very fast. Starts immediately and easy to use. I'm 65 years old and I plan on this being my last lawn mower.
