Not for hillsides
I bought this mower because the hill in front of my house was too steep for a riding mower. Unfortunately, after an hour of mowing up and down the hill with the Ariens walk behind, the drive belts were worn to the point that it would barely pull itself on flat ground. I had to take it to a shop to get the drive belts replaced.
If you have steep hills you should probably invest in a pneumatic or direct drive model. It was an expensive purchase for something that won't do the job for me.
Other than that, it seems like a good mower.

Great Mower, great exercise
The mower works as designed: easy to use, easy to adjust cutting level, starts right up, to go from forward to reverse is very easy, has lots of power.
I have 5 acres and plan on cutting about 3 with this mower instead of walking on tread mill for 1 hour a day and getting nothing done.

Disappointment
Purchased the mower about a month ago, and used it twice. The forward drive belt is binding with the pulleys around it. It completely stops all movement.
I contacted Ariens and took mower to dealer they recommended. The dealer was less than happy to see me. From the sound of it, Ariens is not paying them correctly for warranty issues. It has been at shop for 2.5 weeks.
MD RESPONDS: If you bought the mower from us, please contact us; we may be able to work with our Ariens rep to move your repair along.
If you didn't, then you may want to give the folks at Ariens a call at (800) 472-8359. Give them the service facility you are dealing with and the name of the person you spoke with. They should be able to straighten out any problems the service guys are having with their paperwork and get your mower out the door.
Warranty work brings new customers in the door- even if they didn't sell the mower, the service will need to be done yearly. Good customer relations are money in the bank, especially in this economy.
You can also click on the Customer Service button at the bottom of our web site, then choose Service Centers to find a different service center that will appreciate you more.

So far so good
I have used this mower four times and so far so good. I used to have a lawn tractor to mow about 1/2 to 3/4 acres of grass, but when it died I wanted to switch to something that was easier to cut around trees and etc.
This mower is wonderful, the height adjustments are very easy and the cut is very clean and even. I have no complaints about the mower but I will share some of my early experiences.
I now mow my lawn a lot quicker than I did with the lawn tractor.
The mower has a double blade so in deep grass the left side tends to leave a little bit of clippings on the lawn, not a big deal but be aware - I don't use a bagging or mulching kit.
Secondly, handling the mower may take a little getting used to- I used to wrestle with the mower to turn and etc. The truth is you really don't have to fight with it at all, just let it run and gently swing it the direction you want to go.
All in all I am very pleased.

The Orange Crusher
This bad boy has an engine that is powerful and strong.
The handle controls are very easy to use and having the reverse option within reach is a plus when you are in a trouble spot and need to back out.
It takes a few cuts to get used to over a basic 21" cut mower, but once you have the hang of it - it is a pleasure to operate. The cut is professional looking and definitely will cut your time in half.
I did have some trouble with the drive cable. I noticed a considerable difference when I backed the cable out by losing the locking nut exposing some of the threads.
The cable then grabbed a hold of the throttle better and I was able to get increased power and speed going forward with the mower.

It's a BEAST
My yard is not friendly to riders and too large for the average 21 inch mower, so I priced large area walk behinds and found this one to be reasonably priced.
The next size up was more than double the price. Although dual hydrostatic drive would be a lot easier to handle, this mower does a fine job with just a little thought and man power.
I found that it works best if you go straight up and down the steeper banks using reverse as your brakes, and going diagonally up and down the large slopes. This is easier than trying to go sideways and fighting the mower.
On the level surfaces it is a treat to handle. This yard used to take 5+ hours to cut now it takes between 2 to 3- and that is also bagging it with the optional bagger, which is timely to install but well worth the investment.
I would recommend this mower to anyone who wants to cut their mowing time in half.
MD RESPONDS: Please be sure to read and follow all the safety advice in the Owner's Manual, including the parts about how to handle steep or uneven terrain.

Nice mower ...
This is a very good mower all around. I've used it now five times and it runs awesome.
My only complaint is that going down hills, if too steep the mower will run away from you and you have to hold it back...
MD RESPONDS: Some of us with challenging hills wear golf or baseball shoes with spikes for traction on difficult terrain; you may want to try mowing across the slope for better control.

Purrs
I've only used it for about 10 minutes so far just to test it out, but it purred like a kitten.

A Great Mower
After many years (10+) mowing with a 33" wide-cut TB, it was time to move on and try and find something better.
Shopping around and making a decision for another wide-cut was difficult. I really wanted to move up to a 36" cut, but the prices were at least double what this mower cost and I could not justify spending that much more money for a mower that would give me only an additional 2" or 3".
So, I purchased the Ariens 34" WAW1034 mower and I'm really happy with this piece of equipment. Comparing this to my old mower, the WAW1034 is more of a mower. What I mean is- it is built stronger and better than what I have been using.
The cut is extreme and the mower handles really well. Forward and reverse settings are right at your fingertips making cutting around trees and gardens easy. I've used the mower only about 5 hours so far and love it.
I also purchased the bagger unit for this mower. I did need to make some slight modifications to keep grass from flying out of the top and bottom of the bag when mowing.
All in all I love this machine. It should last me many years with some TLC. For those who have never used a wide-cut before it may take a little getting used to, and for those who have- you will find this a great mower.

Boy, does this machine run!
After one too many weekends shot cutting my .5 acre with a 21 inch mower, I got the Ariens on sale. Boy, does this machine run!
My cutting time is half or less than what is was. The spacers used for the cutting height did start to work loose but a little electrical tape to hold them all in place did the trick.
It loves long straight runs- but the in's and out's can get tiring, as can holding down the blade clutch. This is a big machine that need finesse and some strength to maneuver. If you're not up to it, get a riding mower.

Great Mower, Great Price
I've had this mower about five months and it will literally will cut your grass in half the time it takes with a 21".
It has a push button start and fires up immediately. It's heavy duty, has plenty of power, and in my opinion, it's not too big for smaller yards (mine is a quarter acre).
I hate cutting grass, but this mower makes the job more pleasant (only half hour in my case). Get the mulching attachment unless you plan to bag.

My first year with the Ariens WAW1034
Tired of floggin' your old 21", 6hp 'what-ever brand' walk-behind mower to try and get your suburban yard mowed in less than an hour in the hot summer sun?
Then do what I did, pay twice as much money as what a quality 21" self-propelled costs, and then blast through the grass in half the time (I had my wife time me) with the Ariens WAW 1034.
This machine is big and powerful, but it is not overkill like a small zero-turn might be on your quarter- to half-acre lot. My lot is a quarter acre and it takes me 30 minutes to cut everything, including all the tight spots.
As you begin to get a feel for the machine you will learn that the two little forward and backward levers at your right hand are your best friends. They are just like a motorcycle's brake or clutch levers. One is forward, the other reverse. Squeeze more for higher ground speed, less handle pressure for less speed.
The machine MAY be a little heavy in a tight turn for those unable to either man-handle it or finesse it with the forward and reverse levers. This is NOT a beast, but it is not a light weight ballerina either.
It is not for everyone, but it is perfect for the guy or gal who wants to take control of their lawn mowing time and are willing to grab the 'tiger by the tail' and show the grass and the neighbors who's boss of your yard.

Wonderful machine
WOW - what a mower!
It is excellent quality and craftsmanship, and it starts up immediately.
It has heavy duty everything- the only thing I would change is the spacers used for the height adjustment: they seem to turn as the mower turns and sometimes it appears as though they might work themselves loose.
Otherwise, it's a really great buy, it handles very well, it has great power, and the wide wheels and turning wheels in front are great for South Florida lawns with the thick grass we have down here.
5 stars for Ariens.

Nice Machine
I purchased my mower in May 2009, the machine is nice and cuts like a breeze.
I have the bagger attachment- it had a gap on the top, which let the clippings come out and the bag would bounce off due to my bumpy lawn.
I put a piece of foam in the gap on the top of the bracket that the bag hangs on, which corrected the clippings from coming out.
As for the bag falling off, I have used some big pinch clips at the bottom of the support bracket and the bag does not fall off any more.
I am very happy with machine so far- I've only used it twice.

Big Mower For Big Jobs
This machine is very powerful and goes pretty fast to get the job done quickly.
I personally would not recommend this mower for any small yards- it's too big for them.
It works great with landscaping, though, the swivel wheels help move around corners and objects nicely.
