Q: i have a ariens classic walk behind lawn mower with swivel wheels... for mulching do i need the mulching kit or do i just need a differant blade than what came with it????

thanks for the answer

by Steve Hughes from Minnesota on June 28, 2011

A: Steve - in order to mulch effectively, you would need either the mulching plug AND a mulching blade or the mulching kit. Most people find the mulching plug and a mulching blade to be very effective. Ariens Mulch Plug Simply installing a mulch blade will mulch the grass, but you will still leave clumps of grass on your lawn, especially if the grass is wet or thicker or longer than normal.

Q: Todd, this mower was "handed down" to me with no operating instructions. Runs great, however, I want to be sure I'm adjusting height correctly. Is it necessary to move the swivel wheels or do you just control the height by the back wheels? Mows the lawn beautifully!
by Jessica from Minnesota on June 28, 2011

A: Jessica - you would need to adjust the height on both the front swivel wheels as well as the back wheels. The front swivel wheels are adjusted using height adjuster pin.
by Jose, Product Expert

Q: HI, is there a drive shaft protection system designed within the Ariens mower to ensure the integrity of the mtor shaft should one strike a hidden object in tall grass?
by Allan Brady from Virginia on May 22, 2011

A: Allan - no, there is no such system on any of the Ariens mower models. If you should strike a solid object in high grass, chances are you will damage or bend the mower blade drive shaft.

Q: Does the Ariens 21 in. Classic Walk Behind Lawnmower Lawn Dethatcher Kit Mount on the Ariens Classic LM21SW (21") 6-HP Self-Propelled Lawn Mower w/ Swivel Wheels or just fixed axle?
by Chase Harris from Washington on May 15, 2011

A: Chase - the dethatcher kit WILL NOT work on an Ariens Classic with the swivel front wheels.

by Michele Curtis from Texas on April 11, 2011

Q: Todd, I just bought a home on appox. 1/3 acres. It's a corner lot with mature trees and some plantings. I want a self propelled push mower and am willing to spend about $600 +/-. After reading reviews I like the ariens lm21sw and I can get it locally for$639. I also found some snappers that I really like. What's your take. I expect to be here for a long time. Thanks, Mark S.
by Mark Slaughter from Illinois on March 19, 2011

A: Thanks for your inquiry. This mower would be a great choice for your application. It is one of our higher level mowers and will give you years of great performance and durability.

Ariens Self Prop Push Mower With Swivel Wheels
Well I knew I needed bigger wheels to make it easier to go thru St Augustine's Vine grass, so I got rid of my older Toro which worked great for many years, and bought this one. No regrets as I made the right decision.

The only weak area is the pivot pin for locking the one front swivel wheel during embankment situations, which I do not use. The pin popped off when I took it out of the card board box from the shipping truck.

The Kawasaki engine is strong and the mower seems to be... more

Tank!
This mower is built like a tank. It's built well, cuts nice but is very heavy and does NOT do hills at all. Basically this mower is great for large, very flat lawns.

Good Lawn Mower
We lost our "yard guy"... he just stopped showing up & answering phone calls. So I got this mower based on all of the recommendations. It's OK.

I don't know that the front "turning wheels" are worth the extra money. but it's a good lawn mower.

Delivery was fast. but all-in-all a self-propelled mower is just that... a way to sweat your butt off.

Bill,
The swivel wheels make it easier to maneuver around trees and plantings; if you don't have those interruptions in your yard you may not notice much difference.

Heavy Duty
This lawnmower is one heavy machine. First problem I encountered was that on an incline the swivel wheels always severely go downhill which leads to a very uneven cut. I ordered the wheel kit for fixed position wheels and it took care of that problem. The problem now is that the wheels leave tracks because the mower is so heavy and the wheels tend to did in.The mower is hard to maneuver and will take someone who is very strong to comfortably operate. I will gladly sell mine, used three times,... more

Ariens
Would like to see a different 'wheel drive control,' lever option, one that you could hold with just your R hand while maintaining the other 'engine blade control' lever with your L, instead of pinching fingers or accidently releasing the 'engine' stop lever. Simple solution, and was very much disappointed not to have Ariens think of it.

My second Swivel Wheel mower, why this is not more (or most) popular over the front straight axle style is beyond comprehension.

It is so much easier to... more

Wow
This is my first Ariens mower and what a great purchase it was. The one pull start was as easy as a stroke with a pool cue. If you ever going to consider a up scale mower, do yourself a favor and get one with swivel wheels. The swivel wheels give you a zero turning radius with your mower that makes all the difference in the world. The self propelled feature allows ease of use the mower with speeds up to 4 MPH and at that speed, you better have roller skates on. Plus on hills like my lawn... more

One Great Mower
My new Ariens self propelled walk-behind mower is everything I expected and more...from it's zero turn ability with swivel wheels...an adjustable drive system that helps me up steep inclines, which I face while cutting my lawn, here in East Tennessee...a powerful Kawasaki engine and a great bagging system...not to mention the ergonomic shape of the controls...it has made my life a bit easier and I actually look forward to using it.

The delivery was as promised, within four days of shipment,... more

Mower Is Excellent, But There Was A Shipping Issue
I received the mower, but was unable to pull the cord to start the engine. The engine was frozen. After several tries, the motor did eventually start, with a great deal of white smoke coming out of the exhaust. The oil, which was added to the engine before shipment, smelled of gas after I put gas in to initially start the engine. I called a local Ariens repair agent. His thoughts were that the mower had been stored at some point in time on it's side (when shipped, the box itself is not to... more

I'm sorry i bought it!!
my biggests complaints, the throttle control does not set. As you are cutting, you end up running behind it useing the swivel wheel lock, stay away from fence's etc..., one good bump and you have to replace the pin-lockout and roll pin. My advice don't use it, the front wheels fall's off. Stay away from edging around flower beds. You will have to replace your rear tires at least twice
a year. (cheap tires ).

Positives And Negatives
This mower is easy to start and has a powerful and smooth-running engine. The overall design concept is excellent but the "out-of-the-box" experience leaves a lot to be desired.

My biggest complaints after two uses are the throttle control and the pins that hold the front wheels on. I've had a wheel fall off twice (and yes-I know how to seat a cotter-pin) and the mower races forward despite repeated adjustment of the forward speed adjustment. The forward speed will be fine as you... more

Good Engine But Underperforms For The Money
I've been using this mower for a couple of months now. I have an 0.5 acre lot with about 40 trees and hoped this would be good to maneuver around them. It's definitely a solid machine and the engine has worked flawlessly, but it's weight makes it hard to circle around trees unless you use the self-propel. I've had trouble with self-propel speed adjustment moving on its own toward full speed. I adjusted the bolt a couple times and it still came loose and would go from slow to fast while... more
